Community Plug, Kadapa, Andhra Pradesh

The site was a waste dumping yard within an urban context, surrounded by abandoned warehouse buildings and residences, and is in proximity to marginalised communities. The approach was to create an inclusive space by providing recreational opportunities for all age groups and genders, fostering community ties.

A red sandstone pathway with red pergolas connects the two entry points to the park, directing users and segregating activity zones. The high activity zones for children include sensory, cognitive, social, physical, and solitary play through elements like telephone pipes, coloured lollipops, multi-activity play systems, and differently abled play systems. Moderate activity zones feature an open gym and barrel mounds, while passive zones cater to adults with amenities like stone labyrinths, landscaped mounds, a yoga area, and jogging pathways. The unused space beneath urban infrastructure (ELSR) is used as an acupressure pathway. Different types and configurations of seating and walkways are planned based on a behaviour study, which gives opportunities to generate conversations, increase interaction, and improve safety through passive surveillance, thus generating an active public life in an earlier wasteland.
